Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Air-conditioning and Refrigeration will give you the skills to become a qualified air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanic in a high demand industry. You will also be eligible to apply for your Restricted Electrical Licence and Full Refrigeration Handling Licence.


Through theory and practical coursework, you will learn to:

  • Fabricate, assemble and dismantle components
  • Solve problems in electrical circuits
  • Install and commission air conditioning and refrigeration systems
  • Fault find refrigeration and air conditioning systems
  • Add and remove refrigerants used in systems


Plus, develop the attributes needed in this field:

Completing this course will equip you with:

  • A nationally recognised Certificate III qualification
  • The only qualification that will enable you to work on any refrigeration or air conditioning system, irrespective of size or purpose

This is an industry in demand. The residential air-conditioning market is growing steadily and the commercial refrigeration sector is beginning to experience major shortages. Employers are searching for qualified and experienced tradespeople and you can take your transferrable skills into your own business.

This course is superseded. You can still enrol in this course, and you will be contacted if you need to transition into the next version when it is available.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.


There are no formal Training Package entry requirements for this qualification.


To gain entry into this course, it is highly recommended that you:

  • Be employed by a person or persons licensed to conduct refrigeration and air conditioning work in the state of NSW
  • Have either an apprenticeship or employment in the refrigeration and/or air conditioning industry

The majority of people undertaking this course do so within an apprenticeship, but it is possible to enrol in the course as a non-apprentice at some TAFE NSW locations.

If you choose this path, you will be required to demonstrate your employment in the industry and nominate your supervisor for workplace reporting reasons.


You must maintain a trainee refrigerant handling licence throughout the during of your course.

National Refrigerant Handling Licence
This qualification meets the training components for the full national Refrigerant Handling Licence.

NSW RAC Occupational Licence
This qualification meets the regulatory requirements in the state of NSW for individuals undertaking work related to refrigeration and air-conditioning.

Restricted Electrical Occupation Licence
This qualification - with the core Restricted Electrical units - meets the electrical regulatory requirements for related restricted electrical work in the state of NSW.


To be prepared for this course, it is recommended that you have:

  • Good math skills (can use formula)
  • Good reading/writing and comprehension skills (to produce written reports)
  • A vehicle driver licence is likely to be required by your prospective employer

  • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
  • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic after successful completion

This is a part time evening course. You will need to attend approximately 8 hours of class, over 2 evenings a week, for 3 years.

You may also be required to complete approximately 88.7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including private study, and assignment preparation.

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
