TAFE NSW has partnered with NSW Roads and Maritime Services to offer training in the skills required for the roles and responsibilities of RMS Authorised Inspection Station personnel.

With the introduction of the Authorised Inspection Scheme – Business Rules for Authorised Proprietors and Authorised Examiners, our training programs are designed to provide you with:

Who needs to complete this training?

Automotive service and repair personnel who would like to offer RMS registration inspections to their customers.
People and organisations that would benefit from this training include:

What training is provided?

This course is designed for people who are in control of a motor vehicle inspection station. For example, you might be a business owner, workshop manager or supervisor.

An Authorised Proprietor does not carry out vehicle inspections and are responsible for the compliant operation of the Authorised Inspection Station and the inspection activities of Authorised Examiners.

This course is for trade qualified and licensed light vehicle mechanics who wish to become an Authorised Examiner. The course is open to light and heavy vehicle mechanics.

The Authorised ASCIS Examiner is responsible for inspection of currently registered vehicles to ensure compliance with safety check standards. They carryout examination of light vehicles, motorcycles and light trailers and issue inspection certificates used for vehicle registration.

  • Duration: 1 day, 10 hours
  • Cost: $547.00
  • Entry Requirements:
    • APPROVAL FOR TRAINING letter with EXAMINER listed in the eligibility section
    • AUR30616 - Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent
    • NSW Fair Trading Tradesperson's Certificate

This course is for trade qualified and licensed light vehicle mechanics who wish to become an Authorised Examiner. The course is open to light and heavy vehicle mechanics.

The Authorised AUVIS Examiner is responsible for inspection of unregistered registered light vehicles to ensure compliance with identity, design and safety check standards. They carryout examination of light vehicles, motorcycles and light trailers and issue inspection certificates used for vehicle registration.

  • Duration: 3 days, 24 hours
  • Cost: $1,467.00
  • Entry Requirements:
    • APPROVAL FOR TRAINING letter with EXAMINER listed in the eligibility section
    • AUR30616 - Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent
    • NSW Fair Trading Tradesperson's Certificate
    • Active ASCIS Authority

This course is for trade qualified and licensed heavy vehicle mechanics who wish to become an Authorised Vehicle Examiner under the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and NSW Roads and Maritime.

The HVAIS Examiner is authorised to conduct inspections and issue inspection reports on vehicles with a GVM exceeding 4.5 tonne, trailers with an ATM exceeding 4.5 tonne and with power-operated brakes, light trailers and caravans that have an ATM exceeding 2 tonne and buses. They issue inspection certificates that are used for Heavy Vehicle Safety Checks, Identity Checks, Design Checks, Adjustment Of Records and Clearance of Defect Notices.

  • Entry Requirements:
    • APPROVAL FOR TRAINING letter with EXAMINER listed in the eligibility section
    • AUR31116 - Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology or equivalent
    • NSW Fair Trading Tradesperson's Certificate

This course is for trade qualified light and heavy mechanics who wish to be Authorised Examiners for LPG and CNG powered vehicles.
THIS COURSE DOES NOT AUTHORISE THE SERVICE AND REPAIR OF LPG/CNG FUEL SYSTEMS - INSPECTION FOR RMS ONLY.

The Authorised AGIS Examiner is responsible for carrying out inspections and issuing inspection reports on vehicles powered by LPG or CNG fuel systems. It is an additional accreditation that compliments your ASCIS, AUVIS and HVAIS Examiner authority.

  • Study Type: Classroom face to face
  • Duration: 1 day, 10 hours
  • Cost: $697.00
  • Entry Requirements: Current and active ASCIS, AUVIS or HVAIS Examiner authority

Concessions

There are no concessions or exemptions available for these courses. NSW Roads and Maritime Services requests all entrants to the Authorised Inspection Scheme undertake the training. There is no recognition of prior learning. All learners are required to pay the full course fee or, if being funded by an organisation, provide a suitable purchase order at least one week prior to the course commencement.
