Skills for business

Upskilling small businesses in NSW

The most common challenges faced by the small and entrepreneurial business community, are digital awareness, financial literacy, taxation and access to capital.

Now, thanks to the Skills for Business initiative, you can get fully-subsidised skills training for your small business, helping your staff to tackle those challenges.

Knowing that small businesses are critical to the NSW economy, the NSW Government has partnered with TAFE NSW to deliver this initiative, and together we will provide your small businesses with the skills and training you need to grow and succeed for the future.

The Hon. John Barilaro, the Deputy Premier of New South Wales and Minister for Small Business, has announced the NSW Small Business Strategy. Included in the strategy is a $30 million investment to provide fully subsidised skills training for small businesses operating in NSW. This investment will help enable your business to be better prepared for the digital future, will help you become even more competitive and will ultimately create more jobs for the people of NSW.

The Skills for Business initiative allows all NSW based businesses with 199 employees or fewer, access to fully-subsidised skills training in the areas of digital literacy, financial literacy and general business management. While the initiative is open to all small businesses operating within NSW, priority will be given to businesses with fewer than 19 employees.

There are more than 710,000 small businesses in NSW that drive the state's economy. Small business employs around 1.56 million people - almost half the state's workforce, which generates $47 billion in annual wages and salaries.

Business Bytes tutorials

Small business owners are often time poor and require access to relevant information easily and quickly. Some may be seeking short, sharp and current information, rather than formal qualifications, to assist them in making their business as successful as possible.

Business Bytes tutorials will complement the accredited Skills for business training and be delivered online through video content including live streaming. Business Bytes will focus on the key topics facing small businesses operating in NSW, and will be available from July 2018.

Skills for Business online training

TAFE NSW recognises that small business owners and employees are busy, so training is offered online, and available 24/7. Online training provides access to skills anytime and anywhere. With no set class times (outside of scheduled live tutorials) training is conducted at your own pace.

The online delivery of Skills for Business training includes live tutorials with trainers and fellow participants. This allows small business owners and employees to collaborate and seek feedback on business ideas, challenges and plans, while supporting the application of new skills to real-life business challenges.

All of our live tutorials are recorded and are able to be viewed anytime at your convenience. Additionally, subject matter experts are invited to live tutorials to coach, support and discuss needs, challenges and opportunities with business owners and employees.

We also offer the opportunity to undertake Skills for Business training at TAFE NSW Connected Learning Centres, or by accessing computers at your local TAFE NSW library.
