Ballina student set to shine at Global Skills Challenge

A talented local TAFE NSW student is preparing to compete against the world’s best vocational talent at the 2026 Global Skills Challenge in Wollongong, running 24 to 28 June.
The friendly yet high-pressure competition will see participants from 15 countries test their skills in industry-based challenges designed to mirror real-world situations and global standards. Three of TAFE NSW’s four Illawarra campuses are hosting the event.
Throughout the five-day spectacle, competitors sharpen their technical abilities and build industry connections. It’s also an opportunity to prepare for the 2026 WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai this September.
Australia’s national team, the Skillaroos, includes 38 competitors supported by expert mentors and trainers. An impressive 10 TAFE NSW students were selected for the squad after progressing through regional competitions and the 2025 National Championships.
Skillaroo John Ray, from TAFE NSW Ballina, said taking on the world’s best will be a valuable experience.
“Competing in the Global Skills Challenge is an amazing opportunity to represent Australia and showcase the high standard of care we provide in health and social care. It will give me the chance to test myself against some of the best competitors in the world, and see where I can improve ahead of the WorldSkills International competition in Shanghai later this year.
“My journey started through a TAFE NSW program in high school, where I discovered a passion for healthcare. That pathway led me to complete a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance, secure a job with NSW Health before I finished school, and continue my studies through the Diploma of Nursing.
“Nursing has given me the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives, and I genuinely love the work I do. I’m proud to represent Australia and show the positive impact nurses have every day and hopefully inspire more people to consider a career in healthcare.”
The Global Skills Challenge will feature 33 disciplines, including carpentry, plumbing, cooking, healthcare, cyber security, graphic design technology, mechatronics, and automotive refinishing.
Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan said the competition will put a spotlight on the quality of students developing their skills at TAFE NSW.
“This competition gives students from TAFE NSW and across Australia the chance to test themselves at an elite level. It showcases the emerging talent of our vocational education and training sector,” Minister Whan said.
“Each of them has already demonstrated exceptional skill, resilience and determination to reach this stage. The experience of competing alongside their international peers will not only prepare them for the competition in Shanghai but also grow their confidence and help shape their careers.
“It’s inspiring to see so many talented students stepping up to showcase their trades with pride. Good luck to John and the nine other TAFE NSW students representing Australia. I congratulate them on a fantastic achievement earned through unwavering dedication and the strong support of their teachers.”
