Twenty-five apprentices graduated from the Muswellbrook Mining and Energy Skills Program last week. Their achievement marks 20 years of collaboration between TAFE NSW and the mining industry.

The 17-week program equips apprentices with practical skills in fitting and machining, metal fabrication and electrical. They also focus on safety, financial literacy and everyday life skills, helping them meet the real-world expectations identified by employers. This year’s cohort reflects growing diversity in the sector with nine women graduating.

Awards were presented at the graduation with mechanical fitter apprentice Ella Bridge receiving the major achievement award. Ella is a first-year Mechanical Fitter apprentice with AGL Macquarie, working at Bayswater Power Station.

Muswellbrook Mining and Energy Skills Program graduates pose for a photo with their certificates. There are 3 rows of students, the front row kneeling on one knee. The graduates are dressed in suits and dresses, and are all smiling at the camera.

She said the program provided a strong introduction to the industry and helped build her confidence.

“I was inspired into this career by family members doing similar jobs. As a first-year apprentice, this program was a good start. It gave me a better understanding of the work environment and of the roles of people around me,” she said.

“We learned a lot about the tools used in industry, including measuring, cutting and calculating drilling speeds. We also developed skills using lathes to machine parts and learned how to identify hazards and reduce risks.”

The program includes a life skills component, supporting apprentices with practical knowledge such as budgeting and managing day to day responsibilities.

“These were all valuable skills which will continue to help us throughout our apprenticeships and future careers,” Ella said.

Ella said the experience has increased her confidence on the job and reinforced her commitment to the industry.

TAFE NSW Engineering Head Teacher Christopher Orlowski said the students’ professionalism, engagement and dedication were evident throughout the program.

“These students represented the organisations they work for and TAFE NSW Muswellbrook with pride.

“Seeing these young people, the next generation, work through the program shows me the future of this industry is in very capable hands,” Mr Orlowski said.

The apprentices were from AGL Macquarie, BHP-Mt Arthur, Bengalla Mining, Hitachi, Yancoal Mt Thorley Warkworth, Port Waratah Coal Services, and group training organisations Programmed and MIGAS.
