Lachlan's photograph was selected from 108 entries submitted by TAFE NSW students from across the state. It perfectly captured the practical learning at the heart of his training.

The Heart of TAFE photography competition was established in 2022 to coincide with National TAFE Day. It gives TAFE NSW students across the country an opportunity to capture the people, places and experiences that define their TAFE journey. This year's entries reflected the diversity of students’ experience. From practical skills training and industry connections to student achievement and the communities that support them.

Lachlan was announced as the NSW winner at TAFE NSW Ultimo yesterday as part of National TAFE Day celebrations. He received a $1,000 cash prize from the NSW Teachers Federation branch of the AEU and will now progress to the national finals at Parliament House, Canberra on 28 October. The winner from every state and territory will compete for the overall national title and a $5,000 cash prize. The winning photograph will also be exhibited at Parliament House.

For Lachlan, the recognition comes as he works towards a career that could take him well beyond the Hunter region.

“My goal is to become a qualified tradesman, gain as much experience as I can and travel around Australia working across different areas of boiler making,” he said.

President of the NSW Teachers Federation, Henry Rajendra, said the competition provided an opportunity to showcase the people and the experiences that sit at the heart of TAFE.

“The Heart of TAFE photo competition gives students a chance to tell their own stories about learning at TAFE,” he said.

“The quality and range of this year's entries show the diversity of educational opportunities across TAFE NSW and the important role teachers and staff play in supporting students.”

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan said the National TAFE Day and the Heart of TAFE photography competition celebrate the life-changing impact of vocational education and training across NSW.

“Lachlan’s photo captures the heart of TAFE NSW, enabling students to learn real-world skills, build confidence and prepare for secure, rewarding careers.

“From the Hunter to every corner of NSW, TAFE helps students turn their ambitions into opportunities. National TAFE Day is a chance to celebrate the students, teachers and staff who make it that possible every day. Lachlan’s achievement is something the whole TAFE community can be proud of.”
