TAFE NSW Hamilton baking student, Connor Beisler, is preparing to put his skills to the test when he competes at the WorldSkills Australia 2025 National Championships in Brisbane next week.
Connor is one of 15 talented students from TAFE NSW campuses across the Hunter who have qualified for the national competition, which brings together the best emerging trades and skills talent Australia-wide.
WorldSkills competitions celebrate excellence in vocational education and training through regional, national, and international events.
National winners will be in the running to represent Australia as part of the Skillaroos team at the WorldSkills International Competition next year. Hundreds of vocational students will compete in Brisbane over three days, all aiming for gold and the opportunity to showcase their skills on the global stage in Shanghai in September 2026.
Connor said the upcoming competition marks the culmination of months of mentorship and hands-on practice with TAFE NSW teachers.
“WorldSkills is a massive opportunity for me – not just to compete, but to grow as a baker, gain experience, and connect with industry professionals. There’s a lot of attention on competitors, and that exposure can be huge for building a career,” he said. “WorldSkills showcases the best of the best – the highest level of competition for an early career baker. Just to compete is a huge honour. Of course, I hope to win, but regardless, the experience will be invaluable.”
“I’m excited to meet new people, learn from others, and expand my skills. Observing different techniques and sharing knowledge with industry professionals will be an amazing opportunity. The competition will be intense – almost 14 hours of baking over three days. Managing the pressure is key, but if you stay focused, you can get through it.”
Connor’s journey into baking began as a child, learning from his father and grandfather at their family’s Barrington Bakery in Dungog. “Growing up around the family business shaped my path. I saw how baking could brighten people’s day – customers talking about their favourite products, and how food connects people. That inspired me to make great food for great people,” he said.
“I started out wrapping bread rolls in the family business; now I’m off to WorldSkills because of my own ability. It’s been an amazing journey. Bread is my passion. While I make cakes, pastries, and pies in my current role, nothing compares to baking a traditional French baguette. When you get it right – the crust, scent, taste – it's incredibly satisfying.”
“Creating products that look great, taste great, and bring people back for more really inspires me. Seeing regular customers return and attracting new faces – that’s what drives me.”
TAFE NSW Managing Director, Chloe Read praised the Hunter students’ dedication and talent. “These incredibly skilled Hunter region students earned their place in the Nationals after excelling at the regional WorldSkills competition, with the ultimate goal of representing Australia on the international stage next year,” Ms Read said.
“WorldSkills provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students to test their limits and build their confidence, teamwork, and practical skills with the help of their teachers and mentors. The competition provides a powerful platform for students like Connor to demonstrate their capabilities in their chosen field, connect with industry, and boost their careers – and we’re proud to support them as they take this next big step.”
Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan said the success of TAFE NSW students at WorldSkills highlights the strength of the state’s vocational education and training system. “These students are a shining example of the incredible pipeline of talent we’re delivering through quality vocational education and training across the state,” the Minister said.
“TAFE NSW provides world-class, hands-on training and gives students the skills and confidence to thrive in their careers. Importantly, these students represent not only their community, but the future of Australia’s workforce.” The WorldSkills Australia 2025 National Championships will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from 12–14 June.
