Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

  • Build supportive relationships with people accessing services, including children and young people

  • Identify and prioritise client needs and goals

Completion requirements

During your study you’ll need to provide your teacher with the following evidence:

  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC)

  • A National Police Check

  • NDIS Check

  • Vaccination and health screenings

  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires, such as a first aid certificate

Entry recommendations

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • Ideally, a minimum of 12 months industry experience and the goal to secure a team leader or manager position

  • A desire to increase your leadership skills in the community service sector

  • The ability to work unsupervised within your scope of practice

  • Good to excellent computer skills to be able to handle electronic records and documentation

  • A passion of empowering others and providing the best possible support

  • Experience working with vulnerable people in difficult situations and circumstances

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Diploma of Community Services qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 20 units of competency, including 12 core and 8 speciality units.

Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.

Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.
