    Assessments

    Assessments let you show what you've learned and check what you may need to work on.

    • Knowledge assessments: short answer, multiple-choice questions, assignments.

    • Practical skills assessments: demonstrations under observation.

    Work placement

    Work placement gives you real experience and develops your skills.

    • Mandatory work placement is not required in this course however, we strongly recommend you undertake work experience with a suitable industry employer.

    Materials needed

    To complete this course, the following materials are required:

    • Long cotton pants, long cotton sleeve shirt, steel toe capped safety boots and non-marking shoes at an estimated cost of $175

    Additional entry requirements

    To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

    • This course is available online and supported by face to face attendance with a Maritime teacher at Tomaree Connected Learning Centre, available on Wednesday between 1.00pm and 8.30pm. We recommend attending Tomaree Connected Learning Centre for at least 2 -3 hours each week so that you can progress steadily through your course. You will be required to attend practical assessment in the Tomaree/ Nelson Bay area (1 -2 days) and Newcastle area (1 day)

    • You must read and understand the requirements to obtain the AMSA Certificate of Competency on the AMSA website www.AMSA.gov.au for this qualification

    Units taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 8 units of competency, including 8 core and 0 speciality units.

    Course delivery

    Combination study

    Learn through a combination of on-campus classroom, virtual classroom, online, and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled face-to-face or virtual classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

    Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
