Assessments let you show what you've learned and check what you may need to work on.
Knowledge assessments: multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, closed book exam
Practical assessments: observations against practical activities, oral questions either on a vessel or in a simulated work environment
Work placement gives you real experience and develops your skills.
Work placement opportunities, if any, will be confirmed with your teacher.
To complete this course, the following materials are required:
Navigation - required materials: AUS802 chart, Breton type plotter (or Captain Fields type parallel ruler), single hand dividers, drawing (pencil) compass, 2B pencils, pencil sharpener, soft white rubber eraser, calculator at an estimated cost of $140
Navigation - recommended materials: Australian Boating Manual by Captain Dick Gandy at an estimated cost of ABM hard copy = $119 or ABM eBook = $59
Engineering - required materials: long cotton pants, long cotton sleeve shirt, steel toe capped safety boots for the workshop and non-marking shoes for the vessel at an estimated cost of $175

This course is available online and supported by face to face attendance with a Maritime teacher at Tomaree Connected Learning Centre (CLC) between 13:00 and 20:30 every Wednesday. We recommend attending Tomaree CLC for at least 2 to 3 hours each week so that you can progress steadily through your course.
You must be prepared to complete practical assessment for this qualification of between 3 and 6 days duration in Nelson Bay & Newcastle depending on your practical assessments required.
You must read and understand the requirements to obtain the AMSA Certificate of Competency on the AMSA website (www.AMSA.gov.au) for this qualification.
Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 13 units of competency, including 13 core and 0 speciality units.
Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.
Learn through a combination of on-campus classroom, virtual classroom, online, and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled face-to-face or virtual classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.
Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
