    What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships combine formal study with on-the-job training. They help build a skilled workforce, support local businesses and strengthen NSW industries for the future.

An apprenticeship usually takes 3 to 4 years, depending on your course and industry.

    With an apprenticeship, you can:

    • build useful skills, knowledge and experience
    • work in a high-demand, well-paid industry
    • earn money while you learn.

Learn more about apprenticeships and how to get started below.

    Fee-free* eligibility

To be eligible for a fee-free* apprenticeship (including school-based apprenticeships), you must:

    Extra support

If you have a disability, your employer may be able to get financial support. This can include help to adjust your workplace through the Employment Assistance Fund.

    Employers

Employers no longer have to pay student fees for Smart and Skilled funded apprenticeship courses that started on or after 1 July 2018.

    The NSW Government will:

    • handle the $2,000 student fee
    • pay directly to the Smart and Skilled training provider
    • help ensure your business has the skilled staff it needs to succeed
    • ensure a smooth and reliable process for all parties involved.
