    Student travel concessions

    alt=””

As a TAFE NSW student, you may be able to get a travel concession. A concession gives you cheaper public transport fares across NSW.

    When to apply

    Enrol in your course first.

If you're eligible, you'll receive an email 2 weeks (10 business days) before your course start date telling you how to apply.

You must wait to receive the email from us confirming you’re eligible before applying. If you apply too early, you’ll be declined and will need to reapply.

Once submitted, Transport for NSW will send you an email with the outcome of your application.

Who can get a travel concession?

To be eligible for a travel concession in NSW you’ll need to be:

    • living in NSW
    • an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia
    • studying full-time, which means attending class on campus for at least 16 hours each week, this may not apply to you if you are living with disability.

For more information on eligibility and concessions, visit the Transport for NSW web page: Tertiary and TAFE students

    Apprentices and trainees

To be eligible for a travel concession as an apprentice or trainee, you must be actively enrolled and registered with Training Services NSW.

For more information visit the Transport for NSW web page: Apprentices and trainees

You may also be eligible for financial assistance to help pay for long distance travel. Your journey must be to attend day or block release training with your Registered Training Organisation and must be more than 120 km in total.

    Students with disability

If you live with disability, you may have different options available for a travel concession. This could include if you study online and need to travel to access your local TAFE NSW campus.

To be eligible, you’ll also need to connect with a TAFE NSW Disability Teacher Consultant

To find out more, call us on 131 601 and choose the option for disability services.

    Hidden disabilities support

Wearing a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard lets Transport for NSW staff know you may need extra help when using public transport.

To find out more and order a free lanyard visit Transport for NSW extra support for hidden disabilities.

You can also collect a free lanyard from metropolitan or regional train stations.

Using your travel concession on public transport

You must carry your TAFE student card when travelling to prove you’re entitled to a student concession.

If you don’t have a TAFE student card, you can apply for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card.

    Opal network

The Opal network covers Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and the Illawarra.

When travelling on the Opal network you can choose whether to ‘tap on and tap off’ using an Opal card or your phone, watch, credit or debit card.

To link your own card or device for Contactless Concession you’ll need to register with Transport for NSW.

    Regional NSW

If you’re travelling in regional NSW, you’ll need to apply for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card .

    When your travel concession expires

If your circumstances change during your study and you’re no longer eligible for travel concession, we’ll email you to let you know.

Your travel concession will stop working 10 days after your course end date.
