A local 17-year-old Dunghutti woman is building a name for herself in the beauty industry, turning her passion into a thriving home business while completing her Certificate III in Beauty Services at TAFE NSW Kempsey.
Aliarna Dixon, who studied Beauty Services at TAFE NSW Kempsey, has launched her own business, ‘Arna’s Lash & Luxe’, operating out of her home and already attracting a steady stream of local clients through word of mouth.
“Since I was younger, I’ve always had a passion for beauty. It’s grown stronger over time and made me want to start my own business – especially because I come from the toughest part of Kempsey. I wanted to get out of there and build something for myself.”
After facing significant personal challenges, including being kicked out of school and struggling with mental health, Aliarna said TAFE NSW gave her the fresh start she desperately needed.
“When I was in school, I went through a lot – bullying, fights – but at TAFE, it’s peaceful. The support systems are amazing. My teacher Nikki has been the best – I honestly wouldn’t be where I am without her.”
In addition to her TAFE NSW studies, Aliarna is completing two online courses in brow lamination and lash extensions and offering a full range of beauty services from home. She said the best part of the job is helping women feel confident.
“I love chatting with clients one-on-one. It’s such a real connection – we both open up and leave feeling better.” Having recently finished her course, Aliarna has her sights set on studying a Diploma of Beauty Therapy to expand her skills and grow her business further.
“It took me a long time to get where I am today. Everyone who knows me knows I’ve been through hell and back. But now I’m proud of myself – I’ve built something I love, and I’m just getting started.”
TAFE NSW Teacher of Beauty and Nails, Nikkie Freeburn said Aliarna’s story is testament to the power of quality vocational education and training.
“It’s great to see students like Aliarna following their dreams and setting themselves up for success. There are so many job opportunities in the beauty services industry, and our highly practical courses are designed to give students in depth knowledge of a range of treatments.
They also gain customer service skills and industry know-how, so they can build their own client base and even launch their own business.”
Aliarna was recently nominated for a prestigious TAFE NSW Gili Award, which celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student achievement
