Become a barber and join the thriving men’s grooming industry. Whether you’re looking at working on your carving skills or an apprentice learning on-the-job, you’ll fine-tune your practice providing services to clients in our industry-standard barbershops and salons.
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Fade, carve and cut hair
Design and maintain beards and moustaches
Shave heads and faces
Implement freehand clipper techniques
Identify and treat hair and scalp conditions
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
Experience to provide barbering services to clients in industry-standard barbershops or salons
A trade qualification (for those studying as an apprentice)
The opportunity to apply for your Certificate of Proficiency
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol
Be employed as an apprentice in the industry, as evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
Submit your Training Plan Proposal (TPP) with your application

The Certificate III in Barbering does not have any post-graduate courses.
At TAFE NSW, we recognise your previous study and work experience. You can apply for recognition of prior learning or a credit transfer with any of our courses. If you're successful you'll get your qualification faster.
Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Barbering qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 26 Units of competency, including 21 core and 5 speciality units.
Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.
