    Additional requirements

    To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

    • This course is available online and supported by face to face attendance with a Maritime teacher at Tomaree CLC available on Wednesdays between 1:00 PM and 8:30 PM. We recommend attending Tomaree CLC for at least 2 -3 hours each week so that you can progress steadily through your course. You will be required to attend practical assessment in the Tomaree/ Nelson Bay area (1 -2 days) and Newcastle area (1 day).

    • You must read and understand the requirements to obtain the AMSA Certificate of Competency on the AMSA website www.AMSA.gov.au for this qualification.

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • the physical capacity to learn and perform the duties of a General Purpose Hand (Deckhand) aboard a vessel, including handling lines and ropes to moor a vessel, using deck machinery to anchor a vessel, and assisting with cargo work, shipboard maintenance and engine room tasks

    • the ability to swim 50 m and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a lifejacket

    • a resistance to chronic seasickness

    • the ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions

    • the capacity to move around a vessel and board survival craft unassisted

    • the ability to meet minimum medical fitness standards as stipulated for General Purpose Hand on the AMSA website

    • the ability to complete 5 days of qualifying sea service.
