    Entry requirements

    This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.

    • This course can be completed as part of a traineeship. Enquire today to check the eligibility requirements.

    • You must hold a Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) and hold the AMSA General Purpose Hand Near Coastal certification (shown on your AMSA qualification card) or a mechanical trade qualification plus experience in the maritime industry.

    • Relevant experience in the maritime industry can be used as qualifying sea service towards the AMSA Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Certificate of Competency.

    • Sea service must be on vessels with inboard diesel engines of at least 150 kW.

    • Check the AMSA website to ensure you meet all [AMSA certification requirements (https://www.amsa.gov.au/qualifications-training/domestic-qualifications/marine-engine-driver-grade-2-near-coastal).

    Note:

    • You must apply for your AMSA certification within 12 months of finishing this course or AMPA. This means you must complete all required AMSA sea time within the same 12-month period.

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • successfully completed a Certificate II in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal)

    • a General Purpose Hand qualification or other Maritime or Engineering/Mechanical trade qualification

    • the physical ability to perform the duties of a Marine Engine Driver aboard a vessel, including operating engines and machinery, routine engine maintenance (including changing oil and other fluids), performing safety checks and assisting with other vessel operations

    • a resistance to acute seasickness

    • the ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions.

    • the capacity to move around a vessel and board survival craft unassisted

    • the ability to meet minimum medical fitness standards as stipulated for Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 on the AMSA website.

    Our graduates go onto roles like: chief engineer on Australian domestic vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion less than 750 kW, second engineer on Australian domestic vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion less than 1500 kW, chief or second engineer on Australian domestic vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion, assistant under direct supervision of a chief engineer and worker in an engine room of a vessel with propulsion power up to 3000 kW.

    The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) sets the rules for each maritime qualification to make sure you’re fully prepared to work in that role. After finishing your TAFE NSW course, you’ll need to apply to AMSA and satisfy any certification prerequisites such as sea time and minimum medical fitness standards.
