A pathway for experienced Deck Watchkeepers to progress towards Master less than 500 GT command responsibilities.

Successful completion of the Deck Watchkeeper pathway or the 22 units in the Diploma of Maritime Operations (Deck Watchkeeper). You’ll need to show your certificate or transcript as proof.

You must have completed sufficient seagoing service and operational experience to do command-level training and assessment. You’ll need to show your resume, a letter from your employer and employment records.

You must be preparing to progress to the role of Master less than 500 GT and complete the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) oral examination requirements.

You must meet any workplace or employer requirements that apply to your role.

participation in classroom, practical and simulator-based training activities

completion of all required bridge simulator exercises

competency in vessel command, crew management and ship handling

compliance with workplace health and safety requirements

attendance at scheduled training and assessment activities.

experience carrying out bridge watchkeeping duties on commercial, government or Defence vessels

a good understanding of navigation, vessel operations, maritime legislation and safety management systems

enough seagoing experience to support your progression towards Master less than 500 GT certification

a goal of progressing into vessel command and leadership roles.
