Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Adjust nutritional requirements
Provide a safe and secure environment for pregnant mares
Prepare birthing equipment, materials, environment and personal protective equipment
Prepare and foal down broodmares
Monitor broodmares and newly born foals
Identify signs when veterinary assistance is required
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
A nationally accredited Statement of Attainment
A pathway to further study in Certificate III in Horse Breeding or Certificate III in Performance Horse
Specialist skills that will enable you to work in the horse breeding industry foaling broodmares
Some courses require evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
An interest in caring for pregnant and birthing mares
A passion for horses and animal wefare
An interest in starting or broadening your career in the equine industry
Availability for night watch foaling activities
Access to a horse breeding facility or are employed in industry. If you're not currently employed, you will need to secure a workplace or work voluntarily at a horse breeding facility. TAFE NSW may be able to support you in looking for one where you can perform the practical skills needed to complete this course.
