    About this course

    Build skills in set and prop design for theatre, film, TV and stage. This entry-level course teaches you to design, build and dress sets, use lighting and audio equipment and set up productions. Start your creative career or pathway to further study.

    Learning outcomes

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • design, build and construct set pieces and props

    • source items and dress sets for television, film or live stage

    • use lighting desks and a range of lights

    • set up and pack down stage equipment and performer gear (backline)

    • work with projectors, screens and cameras.

    Learn core skills that prepare you for opportunities in your chosen field.

    • A nationally accredited qualification at a certificate III level.

    • Engage in live events and entertainment design with audio, lighting and vision equipment.

    • Exposure to pre-production skills, including lighting design and stage plans.

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • enclosed shoes and ear protection

    • an interest in live production

    • the ability to lift portable staging and lighting equipment

    • the ability to work well in a team

    • the ability to attend rehearsals, events and live performances outside class hours, including evenings and weekends

    • Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level.

    The following foundation skills:

    • You can plan your work and try to solve problems on your own.

    • You can understand documents you see often in everyday life.

    • You can write short sentences or lists to share information.

    • You can solve maths problems you often see in real life.

    • You can speak clearly and explain your thoughts in a group.

    • You can use email, search the internet and open files.

    Units taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Live Production and Technical Services (Scenery and Props) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 15 ​​units of competency​, including 4 core and 11 speciality units.
