    About this course

    Start your career as a vehicle refinishing technician. Learn how to paint, refinish, repair and maintain painted surfaces on vehicles, including cars, recreational vehicles, aircraft and marine craft.

    Learning outcomes

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • interpret and apply automotive repair instructions

    • remove paint from vehicle surfaces

    • prepare spray-painting equipment for use

    • apply basic colour-matching techniques and final topcoats

    • perform vehicle detailing.

    Apprenticeship

    • You must be employed as an apprentice in the industry.

    • Your Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP) must submit your Training Proposal Plan (TPP).

    Non-apprenticeship

    • Non-apprenticeship pathways for trade qualifications let you turn your industry skills into a recognised qualification. You can do this through recognition of prior learning (RPL) and any gap training.

    • You must be at least 21 years of age. Show this with photo ID.

    • You must have at least 2 years of work experience in this trade. Show this with your resume and/or letters from employers.

    • You must either be currently working in the industry (shown by a letter from your employer) or have worked in the industry in the past 5 years (shown by your resume and/or letters from employers).

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • an aptitude for practical work

    • an enjoyment of working with your hands

    • an eye for colour and design

    • good communication skills

    • a reasonable fitness level to manage manual tasks like working on work platforms, kneeling, bending and standing

    • a keen interest in design in the automotive industry

    • Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level.

    Units taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 30 units of competency, including 18 core and 12 speciality units.
