SAFETY

Australia is a peaceful country with low levels of crime. However, it is still wise to avoid dangerous situations and keep yourself safe. You can download some helpful safety tips from the City of Sydney website.

The NSW Police Force has also created a safety video for students studying in NSW.

Sun safety

The sun can be very strong in Australia, making it easy to get sunburned. The following guidelines will help you to protect yourself from skin damage and skin cancer:

  • Avoid being in the sun for long periods between 10am and 3pm
  • Wear UV (ultraviolet) protective sunglasses
  • Wear a broad brim hat that protects your face and neck
  • Apply UV sunscreen at least every 20 minutes

Beach safety

Going to the beach is a popular activity in Australia, especially in the summer months. The following guidelines will help you get the most out of your visit to the beach:

  • Swim between the red and yellow flags, as this is the area of the beach surf lifesavers patrol, and can help you if you get into difficulties while swimming
  • Read the safety signs provided by surf lifesavers and the local council
  • Ask surf lifesavers for advice on surf conditions before entering the water – they’re happy to help!
  • Swim with a friend so you can look out for each other
  • Keep an eye on your valuables while swimming – where possible do not take valuables to the beach

More information on beach safety is available in 34 languages on the Australian Surf Life Saving website.
