    Gain your Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Aircraft Welding Authority licence. Weld carbon steel and low alloy steel components to CAAP 33-1(1) standards and complete welding examinations for joints 1, 2 and 4.

    Learning outcomes

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • Identify and apply CASA requirements for manual welding in aircraft maintenance

    • Weld butt, fillet and tube joints 1, 2 and 4 to CAAP 33-1(1) standards

    • Perform welding exams on carbon and low alloy steel

    • Read and interpret technical drawings and maintenance data

    • Meet CASA assessment criteria for visual, metallographic and mechanical weld testing

    • Understand responsibilities and limitations of holding an Aircraft Welding Authority licence.

    • Ability to obtain an Aircraft Welding Authority licence issued by Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA)

    Entry requirements

    This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol

    • Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Aviation (Structures), as evidenced by your certificate or transcript, or

    • Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Structures or Mechanical), as evidenced by your certificate or transcript, and

    • Enrolment in the Certificate IV in Engineering (Welding), as evidenced by your current transcript or enrolment confirmation, and

    • Eligible to apply for, or holding a current Aviation Reference Number (ARN), as evidenced by your ARN.

    Completion requirements

    During your study you’ll need to provide your teacher with the following evidence:

    • Participate in all theory and practical training

    • Complete the required CASA aircraft welding examinations for joints 1, 2 and 4

    • Prepare a weld sample for NATA-accredited testing

    • Meet visual, metallographic and tensile/bend test standards for welds.

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • Ability to provide your own personal protective clothing including enclosed leather boots, drill cotton long-sleeve shirt and trousers

    • Ability to provide your own welding equipment including face shield, leather welding gauntlets (no riggers gloves) and hearing protection (earplugs or earmuffs)

    • Ability to provide your own clear or yellow safety glasses (no dark tint) and oxy goggles with a shade 5 or 6 lens.

    Licensing

    This course supports your application for a CASA-issued Aircraft Welding Authority under Civil Aviation Regulation CAR 33D. This licence is required to carry out welding on Australian aircraft and is valid for two years. For further licensing information, visit the CASA website This course leads to a licensed occupation in NSW which means you must hold a SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence to gain employment in this field. This course includes unit/s that allow you to apply to be assessed for the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence. SafeWork NSW conducts the licence assessment and requires you to be at least 18 years old by the time you are assessed, evidenced by a valid form of ID.

    During your course, you will enrol in your specific licensing assessment by logging into the MyServiceNSW app. Visit MyServiceNSW to set up your account. Once logged in, follow these four steps:

    1. Complete your digital proof of identity by providing two forms of listed identification.
    2. Select and enrol in your chosen SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence assessment through your MyServiceNSW account. You’ll receive a confirmation email with your Assessment Enrolment Number (AEN).
    3. Provide your AEN to the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence accessor before your assessment.
    4. After successfully completing your assessment, your results will be sent directly to your email address.

    Please note: You can get support with the SafeWork NSW High Risk Work Licence enrolment process by calling Service NSW on 13 77 88, Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm (AEST).
