    Assessments

    Assessments let you show what you've learned and check what you may need to work on.

    • Knowledge assessment: short answers, extended responses, research tasks and assignments.

    • Skills assessment: case studies and group assessments.

    • Practical skills assessment: role plays, demonstrations under observation and group work.

    Note:

    • Role plays are required. These will be completed with real people in the same room as the student.

    Work placement

    Work placement gives you real experience and develops your skills.

    • To be able to successfully complete this course, you will need:

      • to provide a valid and clear Working With Children Check (WWCC) and Federal Police Check prior to work placement.
      • At Diploma level students are expected to be able to read, comprehend and express complex issues.
    • Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

      • Work placement hours are built into the course via a strong practical focus and industry partnership. Provide a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) and Criminal Record Check prior to work placement.
    • Connect with the Mental Health, Youth Work and Counselling (MHYWC) Team by joining the weekly drop in session each Wednesday from 11:30am to 12.00pm (public holidays excluded).     Units taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Diploma of Counselling qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 17 units of competency, including 13 core and 4 speciality units.

    Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

    Course delivery

    Virtual classroom (on campus)

    Learn virtually by attending a TAFE NSW campus or Connected Learning Centre. Like learning on campus, you will receive a timetable of when to attend virtually. You'll use video or web conferencing technology to connect to your virtual classroom with your teacher and other students.

    Depending on your course, you may also complete some of your training online, or through our network of Mobile Training Units, which give you access to practical training and simulated environments.
