If you’re currently in lockdown and want to upskill, you can with a fee-free* online short course.

TAFE NSW, in conjunction with the NSW Government, is offering a number of fee-free* short courses to all NSW residents*, but places are limited.

Courses are a mix of self-paced online or teacher-led virtual classrooms, which can pathway into a variety of full TAFE NSW qualifications.

* Eligibility criteria and T&Cs apply including two courses per person.

LGA Short Courses - Eligibility

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you need to be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian humanitarian visa holder, identified temporary visa holder or New Zealand citizens. You also need to be 15 years or over, no longer at school and living or working in NSW.

Terms and Conditions

You can only enrol in up to two Fee-Free* Courses at a time.

LGA Short Courses - Frequently Asked Questions

‘Fee-free* short courses’ is an initiative of the NSW Government and TAFE NSW to support those impacted by COVID-19 and funded under Smart and Skilled Subsidised Training.

Course numbers are limited. Eligibility criteria, terms and conditions apply.

 

To be eligible, you need to be:

  • an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder, identified temporary visa holder or New Zealand citizens.
  • 15 years or over, no longer at school and living or working in NSW.
  • You do not need to reside in a locked down Local Government Area (LGA).

Yes. terms and conditions include:

  • You will be required to actively participate and progress in your course of study. TAFE NSW will review your eligibility to continue your studies in a fee-free* course if there are any prolonged periods of non-participation during your course of study.
  • You can enrol in up to two fee-free* courses at a time.

If you are unsure about a specific requirement, require clarification or have any questions, please contact TAFE NSW.

 

Yes, provide you met eligibility criteria and places are still available the fee-free* short course are available statewide, not just in the locked down Local Government Area (LGA). Terms and conditions do apply.

 

These courses are free for those who meet the Smart and Skilled requirements for enrolment.

Online Study gives you the same qualification and training outcomes as studying on campus. As there is no weekly timetable for classes, students can enjoy the flexibility of studying when and where it suits them. A virtual classroom experience connects teachers and students from different locations in real time, using web conferencing technology via MS TEAMS on set days and times as advised in the course details. Get ready for learning in a virtual classroom here.

TAFE NSW offers a variety of Government subsidised training, including programs like JobTrainer, Mature Age Workers’ Scholarships, Apprenticeships & Traineeships, as well as other Smart and Skilled subsidised training and qualifications. Find out more here.

If the course you’d like to enrol in is full, you can join a waitlist. Once you are placed on the waitlist, we’ll let you know when a place becomes available. We’ll also offer any alternate study options we think may interest you. We understand the importance of getting into the right course, which is why new courses and classes are added weekly.

At TAFE NSW, we believe in providing you with the best learning experience possible. We have limited the amount of students in each class to ensure you feel strongly supported throughout your qualification.

If a class is full, you may see the option to ‘join a waitlist’. Joining the waitlist means you will be the first to know when a place becomes available.

Yes, you can. If you are on a waitlist, you can still apply to study other courses.

Yes. If you choose to enrol in a different fee-free* course, you must complete that course. Once you’ve completed it, you will have to reapply for your original preference.

For example, if you join the waitlist for the Statement of Attainment in Business Administration and then enrol in the Statement of Attainment in Medical Terminology, you will need to complete the Statement of Attainment in Medical Terminology. Once you have completed it, you can reapply for your original preference, the Statement of Attainment in Business Administration.

If you are in Australia on a temporary visa and that visa allows you to study, you can apply to study at one of our campuses. The rules that apply to you, though, are different from those for our local students, or international students on a student visa. You can find out more here.
