COURSE SUCCESS REQUIREMENTS

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your course work.

You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • Australian National Police Record Check
  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) depending on your work placement
  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

WORK PLACEMENT

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

During your course you will attend a one-day workplace orientation, and complete one of the following levels of mandatory work placement hours:

  • 120 hours (15 days) of work placement - if you are already working in the industry
  • 240 hours (30 days) of work placement - if you are new to the industry

Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will either arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To successfully complete this course, students will need:

  • A competent level of literacy and English language skills (level 3 on screening during week one).
  • A computer with internet as assessments are completed online.
  • A beginning level of employability and life skills that will enable them to safely care for elderly people in a busy environment, on course completion.
  • To be responsible for providing appropriate clothing for work placement: white polo shirt, black/navy pants and black/navy enclosed shoes with non-slip soles and a fob watch.
  • To be responsible for any travel costs to complete on the job learning activities, work placement and field trips. Campus workplacement is held ONLY at held only at Wagga/Albury/Wollongong/Shellharbour/Queanbeyan/Moss Vale/Nowra.

Work placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

  • 120 hrs of supervised workplace experience, in a residential aged care environment. Teachers will organise student work placement and match students to relevant organisations . Depending on the type of organisation, some or all of the following advice will be required BEFORE commencement of work placement:

  • Satisfactory completion of a National Criminal Record (police) Check.

  • Secure a seasonal flu shot, with documentation of the batch number, and possibly a Covid vaccine, dependent on Government guidelines.

  • Some facilities require students to have a Working With Children Check.

INFORMATION SESSIONS

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a part time day connected course. You will need to attend approximately 4 hours of class via connected learning over 1 day per week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 21 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Self-study, revision, reading, library/learning hub.

There are 120 hours of required work placement required to be competent in this qualification. This work placement has been pre-scheduled as part of this course. Learners will attend 4 hours of online classes weekly and 10 x 5 hour workshops throughout the course.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who are interested in caring for older people in an aged care facility. The delivery involves face to face teaching by qualified educators who will prepare you for a career in the aged care industry. Assessments are completed online, on placement, and in the practical teaching labs.

This course is offered by Connected Classroom.  This is just like a regular classroom, but teachers and students use the latest video conferencing technologies.

Your teacher can be in one TAFE location, and you can join the class from another TAFE location using video conferencing equipment or a mobile device. You can also join in from a venue in a participating regional community. You will be able to see and talk to your teacher and other students as though they were in the room with you. You will also have access to support to meet your learning needs.

If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This is a Connected Learning course. This means you will join your teacher and other students in a virtual classroom and will participate in learning activities via video or web conferencing technology. Depending on the course, you may be able to join the class from your local TAFE NSW campus, or from anywhere with a good internet connection, such as your home. Much like a regular class, you will have scheduled times of attendance. The specific attendance requirements for this course are below.

This course is currently scheduled on Wednesday 10.00am to 2.30pm via connected learning and regular face-to-face workshops on Friday 9.00am to 5.30pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
