    Assessments

    Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

    • Skills assessment: role play scenario, presentation, practical, observation including workplace assessments

    • Knowledge assessment: multiple choice, true or false, short answer questions

    • Case study: case study scenario, reflection

    • Portfolio: samples of work in a workplace environment

    • Project: report, research-based project, journal, essay

    Work placement

    Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

    • You will undertake a mandatory 120 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer. Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

    • This course requires access to a core textbook which can be purchased online "Individual Support in Australia" online at http://itsashop.org.au/ Alternatively, this textbook can be accessed through the TAFE library subject to availability.

    Additional entry requirements

    To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

    • To successfully complete this course, students will need:

      • A competent level of literacy and English language skills (level 3 on screening during week one).
      • A computer with internet as assessments are completed online.
      • A beginning level of employability and life skills that will enable them to safely care for elderly people in a busy environment, on course completion.
      • To be responsible for providing appropriate clothing for work placement: white polo shirt, black/navy pants and black/navy enclosed shoes with non-slip soles and a fob watch.
      • To be responsible for any travel costs to complete on the job learning activities, work placement and field trips. Campus workshops are held ONLY at held only at Wagga/Albury/Wollongong/Shellharbour/Queanbeyan/Moss Vale/Nowra.
    • Work placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

      • 120 hrs of supervised workplace experience, in a residential aged care environment. Teachers will organise student work placement and match students to relevant organisations . Depending on the type of organisation, some or all of the following advice will be required BEFORE commencement of work placement:
      • Satisfactory completion of a National Criminal Record (police) Check.
      • Secure a seasonal flu shot, with documentation of the batch number, and possibly a Covid vaccine, dependent on Government guidelines.
      • Some facilities require students to have a Working With Children Check.

    UnitsUnits taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate IV in Ageing Support qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 18 Units of competency, including 15 core and 3 speciality units.

    Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

    Course deliveryVirtual classroom, on campus

    You will attend a TAFE NSW campus or Connected Learning Centre to connect with your teachers and other students in a virtual classroom where you will participate in learning activities via video or web conferencing technology. Much like a regular class, you will have scheduled times of attendance. Depending on what you are studying, your course may also include some online units or practice training though our network of Mobile Training Units.
