Course Details

The Diploma of Applied Commerce is a higher education qualification that prepares graduates for employment in support roles in the financial services industry, business and commerce. Graduates will develop broad knowledge and skills in the areas of accounting foundations, finance and investment, marketing and management fundamentals, business statistics and applied economics.
The course is designed as a one year full-time or part-time equivalent. Graduates can continue into Year 2 of the TAFE NSW Bachelor of Applied Commerce.

When you study with TAFE NSW, we want you to succeed. Entry requirements allow us to make sure that you have the right pre-existing knowledge and skills to achieve your chosen qualification. You will need to provide evidence that you meet the requirements listed in this section.

Applicants are required to hold, at minimum, one of the following to be considered eligible for admission:

  • a NSW HSC (Higher School Certificate) or equivalent OR
  • a recognised Tertiary Preparation Certificate OR
  • a qualification from a Registered Training Organisation at Certificate IV level or above OR
  • the completion of at least one year full-time or equivalent in a degree course at a higher education institution.

Applicants who satisfy the minimum eligibility requirements may be invited to attend a pre-admission interview which will include a literacy and numeracy test.

If you do not meet the minimum eligibility requirements for this course, you may be able to apply for entry into this course based on mature age or disadvantage. Contact the course coordinator for details of evidence that you should attach to your application.

International applicants must meet proof of eligibility and course entry requirements. In addition, international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at a minimum IELTS level of 5.5 with a minimum of 5 in any one band. With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

Domestic applicants must satisfy at least one of the requirements below:

  • NSW HSC or Year 12 or equivalent
  • Certificate IV or higher from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
  • Mature age or disadvantage entry provisions


This is a part time evening on campus course. You will need to attend approximately 8 hours of class, over 2 evenings a week, for 2 years. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 5-10 hours of other study per week.


This Diploma course is the first year of the Bachelor of Applied Commerce course and on completion students may apply and articulate into Year 2 of the degree. Students will study subjects in management, marketing, accounting, finance, financial planning, economics and may seek careers in the banking and financial services sector.

This Higher Education Diploma course consists of 8 subjects completed part time evening and can be completed over 2 evenings in one year (or longer). On completion, students can apply and articulate into Year 2 of the Bachelor of Applied Commerce course.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

Part time evening study requires the study of 2 subjects or 8 hours of classes per week - Wednesday and Thursday evening.


The 2021 fees are calculated at $1,310 per 10 credit point subject. Students must successfully complete 8 subjects to obtain this qualification. TAFE NSW Higher Education tuition fees are subject to change.
