    Assessments

    Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

    • Knowledge assessments: short answer, extended response, research and theory tasks

    • Practical skills assessments: demonstrations under observation. Depending on your location, you may be required to provide clients for your practical classes and assessments.

    • Simulated workplace projects: scenario-based problem solving

    Work placement

    Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

    • To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to meet the following work placement requirements:

      Work placement is not compulsory, however it is highly recommended. Learners enrolled in this course are encouraged to complete work placement with a host employer as part of their training program. Work placement is designed to enrich the learning, compliment the formal training and enable an easier transition into the industry once the course is completed.

      Practical sessions can be completed as work placement with a host employer that has been approved by the teaching section. Learners not participating in work placement with a host employer, will be required to participate in scheduled clinic sessions at TAFE, providing services on paying clients.

    Materials needed

    To complete this course, the following materials are required:

    • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

      • You will need to provide for yourself Trade equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times. Approximate cost $80-$150.
      • Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers.
      • As part of this course, you will be required to provide hairdressing services on paying clients and may also need to provide clients for some of your practical classes and assessments.
      • You must comply with Work Health & Safety requirements for classes, including wearing closed-in, protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry.

    UnitsUnits taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate II in Salon Assistant qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 12 Units of competency, including 8 core and 4 speciality units.

    Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

    Course deliveryCombination study

    Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

    Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
