The nationally recognised Certificate II in Salon Assistant prepares you for exciting work as a salon assistant. Practise hairdressing and barbering techniques on real clients, and with further study become a qualified hairdresser, barber or salon owner.

Traineeship
TAFE NSW offers the Certificate II in Salon Assistant as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol as a trainee you must:
- Be employed in the salon industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to:
- attend a compulsory information session where you will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy screen to determine whether you meet the entry requirements or need additional LLN support or may need to enrol into an alternative pathway. Local level entry requirements are identified at an ACFS level 2 for this qualification.
To successfully complete this course, you will need:
- to provide services on paying clients and may also need to provide models for some of your practical classes and assessments.
- to comply with Work Health & Safety requirements for classes, including wearing closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry.
Work placement is not compulsory, however it is highly recommended.
Learners enrolled in this course are encouraged to complete work placement with a host employer as part of their training program. Work placement is designed to enrich the learning, compliment the formal training and enable an easier transition into the industry once the course is completed. Clinic sessions can be completed as work placement with a host employer that has been approved by the teaching section. Learners not participating in work placement with a host employer, will be required to participate in scheduled clinic sessions at TAFE, providing services on paying clients.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a full time course. You must attend approximately 14 hours of class. You may also be required to complete approximately 5 hours of additional study. This additional study could include private study, work placements and research.
The course will run 3 days a week for 18 weeks.

These routine and repetitive tasks are completed under direct supervision and with guidance from hairdressers who manage the client service.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.
This course is currently scheduled on Monday, Thursday and Friday with day classes. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.
SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
- You will be required to purchase equipment/tools of trade and personal protective equipment (PPE) at an approximate cost of - $100.
- WH&S requirements for classes: You must wear closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry. Please note that the tool kit is equipment required for the course which you will own.
- Non compulsory item: TAFE NSW Hair & Beauty T-shirt is recommended and can be purchased at an approximate cost $20.
