Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Hairdressing enables you to launch your career as a qualified hairdresser and hairstylist. Learning a broad range of hairdressing skills as well as building your clientele, this course will qualify you to work in an established salon or start your own.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Hairdressing as either an apprenticeship or non-apprenticeship, so you can style the career you want.

Apprenticeship
To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as an apprentice in the hair industry evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
  • Submit your training plan proposal (TPP) with your application

Non-apprenticeship
You will need to be either:

Experienced in hairdressing salon work

To be eligible for a subsidised place in this course as a non-apprentice, you must:

  • Be over 21 years of age
  • Provide evidence, such as a resume or letter of support from your employer, of current industry experience. Your workplace evidence will be reviewed prior to course entry to make sure your skills and knowledge meet course requirements

If there are gaps in your industry experience, you will need to complete simulated work activities to ensure you are able to meet work evidence requirements.

New to hairdressing (commercial)

You will need to secure work placement (details below) to meet the on-the-job component of your training. It is important to know that there is no government subsidy available for this study option.

WORK PLACEMENT

There is no work placement requirement for this qualification. As an apprentice, you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.

If you are enrolling as a non-apprentice, you need to be in relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments in order to meet the course completion requirements.

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a full-time, blended delivery course. You will need to attend approximately 24 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 36 weeks/ 1 year. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 5 hours of other study per week.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Are over 21 years of age and unsuitable for an apprenticeship pathway.
  • Have previous workplace experience in a hairdressing salon or,
  • Are currently employed in the Hairdressing industry or,
  • Require Industry skills to be assessed through recognition of prior learning and gap training is delivered for any skills not yet achieved or,
  • May have previous experience and qualifications from overseas that that have been translated to English.

This course is designed for people with no experience in a hairdressing salon. You will develop the skills and knowledge to become a qualified hairdresser. On successful completion of this qualification, you will be job ready in a range of hairdressing services that include: cutting, colouring, design, chemical work and customer service.

As part of this course, you will be required to provide hair services on paying clients and may also need to provide clients for some of your practical classes and assessments. You must comply with Work Health & Safety requirements for classes, including wearing closed in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry.

To meet the requirements of this course, learners should be employed in a hairdressing salon where they provide hair services on clients. Work placement is designed to enrich the learning, compliment the formal training and enable an easier transition into the industry once the course is completed. Learners will also be provided with access to clinic sessions at the TAFE campus Hairdressing facility, providing services on paying clients. Learners will be required to complete 504 hours of workplace activities and/or clinic sessions. Clinic sessions can be completed as work placement with a host employer that has been approved by the teaching section.

This course is currently scheduled on Mondays from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Tuesdays from 8:30am to 4:30pm, and Thursdays from 9:00am to 2:00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.
