    Former paratrooper lands new mission

“It’s been an awesome career move and the role lets me utilise my technical and creative sides.”

Jason Tabet, TAFE NSW Ultimo graduate

After 11 years as a paratrooper with the Australian Defence Force, Jason returned home to find himself at a career crossroads.

Enter TAFE NSW. Mr Tabet enrolled in a Certificate IV in Building Design at TAFE NSW Ultimo to gain the practical skills and experience required to enter the industry. He enjoyed the course so much that he undertook a Diploma in Building Design shortly after.

The 42-year-old now works as a BIM Project Lead at Bates Smart, the oldest architectural firm in Australia. He is also a part-time building design teacher, sharing his rich industry knowledge and experience with his students.

In a black jacket and white shirt, Jason sits at a table, with an industrial-style architectural background behind him.

From boots on the ground in Afghanistan to leaping into a new career as an architectural designer, Jason Tabet has had a professional journey rich in variety.

After 11 years as a paratrooper with the Australian Defence Force, including a tour of Afghanistan, the Newington man returned home to find himself at a career crossroads.

Unable to find meaningful work and eager for an in-demand career, Mr Tabet discovered building design was one of the fastest-growing fields nationally.

“It’s been an awesome career move and the role lets me utilise both my technical and creative sides,” Mr Tabet said.

“I could do my TAFE NSW course at my own speed, which really suited my lifestyle, and my teachers were great at breaking concepts down.

“I’m working with some of the best architects in the country and that’s such a privilege.”

The father-of-one was so impressed by his TAFE NSW experience that he has recently taken on a part-time role as a building design teacher. His students can now benefit from his rich industry knowledge and experience.

“Because I’m working at TAFE NSW at the same time as I’m working in practice, I can bring the latest regulations and methodologies to students in real time,” he said.

TAFE NSW Head Teacher of Architectural Technology, Elise Douglas, said Mr Tabet was a powerful example of how TAFE NSW arms graduates with the tools to thrive professionally.

“Jason’s attention to detail was exceptional, and securing his first job as a designer at a big Sydney firm is a testament to that,” Ms Douglas said.

“Our graduates are in high demand and it’s an industry where you can start your own business and have a rewarding career.”

She said the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting was a prerequisite for those wanting to enrol in the Diploma of Building Design.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook and reports from SkillsIQ, there has been a growing demand for building designers and other professionals in the construction industry. This is driven by ongoing infrastructure and housing projects.
