High schoolers build their future with construction taster program

“Programs like this are a game changer for students who are practical in nature as they can develop hands-on skills and get a taste of what it’s like to work on a construction and building site.”

Students across 5 Albury high schools will step into the world of building and construction this month as part of the Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) program, an initiative introducing school-aged students to trade-based career pathways. Taking place at TAFE NSW Albury, the 5-week YES Program – Be A Builder is a unique opportunity for students to learn practical skills.

According to the latest data by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research, 89 per cent of vocational education graduates found work after training, and this number increased to 95 per cent for graduates that studied a trade. Sam Horn, TAFE NSW Carpentry and Construction Teacher, says “The YES Program – Be A Builder is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in practical learning and gaining experience in a rewarding industry.

“We know that not all students thrive in a traditional learning environment. Programs like this are a game changer for students who are practical in nature as they can develop hands-on skills and get a taste of what it’s like to work on a construction and building site. It’s so rewarding to introduce students to new career possibilities and help them reach their full potential,” says Mr Horn.

Xavier Catholic College’s Transition and Pathways Specialist - Stage 4 and 5, Erin Monte believes the initiative’s practical experience complements the school’s academic curriculum and is particularly valuable to practical learners. “We’re proud to offer the YES Program – Be A Builder to our students through TAFE NSW Albury,” says Mrs Monte.

“By bridging classroom learning with real-world application, the initiative empowers our students to make informed decisions about their futures and fosters a deeper understanding of the opportunities within the trades sector. The program is particularly beneficial for our students who thrive in practical environments, allowing them to engage directly with the local building industry and develop essential hands-on skills,” adds Mrs Monte.
