“In a region where industry is experiencing skill shortages, it couldn’t be a better time for youngsters to start a career in the trades”

Students across four Griffith high schools will step into the world of building and construction as part of the Youth Engagement Strategy (YES) program. This initiative introduces school-aged students to trade-based career pathways.

The YES Program in Carpentry takes place at TAFE NSW Griffith. This 5-week program is a unique opportunity for students to learn practical skills that underpin the construction industry, gain confidence handling tools and work as a team.

Jobs and Skills Australia’s latest Jobs and Skills Report estimates that more than 90% of jobs over the next 10 years will require post-secondary qualifications.

Andrew Nichols, TAFE NSW Team Leader Building and Construction, says, “The YES Program in Carpentry is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in practical learning and exploring career opportunities in a highly practical industry.

“We teach students essential skills and provide them with information and industry connections, so they have everything they need to take the next step to becoming a qualified tradesperson. “In a region where industry is experiencing skill shortages, it couldn’t be a better time for youngsters to start a career in the trades,” says Mr Nichols.

For Sanita Lole, Careers Administration at Marian Catholic College, the YES Program in Carpentry provides new opportunities for students who struggle in a traditional learning environment and are undecided about their career aspirations. “The YES program is extremely popular amongst our students because it offers them an outlet for practical learning that they otherwise wouldn’t experience,” says Ms Lole.

“The program equips students with essential skills in a supportive and adult learning environment. Through practical learning, teamwork and critical thinking, our students have the chance to build confidence and resilience, helping to prepare them for future training and employment pathways,” says Ms Lole.
