Tips for getting creative with your kids these holidays

“You are never too young or too old to start.”

    Heidi Freihaut

With the summer holidays stretching out, many parents and carers might be running short of fresh ideas to keep their kids entertained.

TAFE NSW Visual Art and Design teacher, Heidi Freihaut, says getting creative with your kids is a great way to keep them occupied over the holidays and help develop their skills.

Ms Freihaut started practising in the arts almost 30 years ago and began her career by studying a fine arts course at TAFE NSW Newcastle, where she learnt drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.

The TAFE NSW Visual Art and Design teacher stands against a sun-dappled wall with a closed-mouth smile. She wears glasses, creative earrings, and a colorful t-shirt.

Below, Ms Freihaut provides her advice to help make creativity play a starring role in your family’s summer holiday activity list.

Where can you take kids to inspire creativity these holidays?
Many art galleries have public programs and classes for kids or teens over the school holidays to help inspire their creativity. This can include classes introducing them to drawing, digital photography, or even basket weaving. Libraries are also fantastic places for creatively minded kids, with books on crafts, photography, gardening, and more.

What are other creative ways to engage kids and the whole family?
Take a family trip to your regional or state art gallery. Many have free or discounted entry and are located in scenic areas.

What are some creative gift ideas?
Film cameras and Polaroids are fun, affordable options to encourage kids to document their summer.

How can TAFE NSW support someone interested in a creative arts career?
TAFE NSW offers a government-subsidised Certificate III in Visual Arts and other creative courses in design, photography, and even a Bachelor of Creative Practice. Courses cater to school leavers and lifelong learners alike.
