TAFE NSW USI Privacy Notice

    Your Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Your Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your lifelong education number. It creates an online record of your training in Australia.

You need a USI if you are:

    • a student studying nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET)
    • a higher education student applying for a HELP loan or Commonwealth Supported Place
    • a higher education student graduating in 2023 or later.

As your education or training provider, we must collect and verify your USI.

Finding your USI (if you already have one)

You may already have a USI if you have done any nationally recognised training or tertiary education.

It is important that you try to find out whether you already have a USI before attempting to create a new one. You should not have more than one USI. The USI website can help you find your forgotten USI.

    Applying for a USI

If you don’t already have a USI, you can create one using a valid form of identification. Don’t create a new USI if you already have one. If you’re not sure, you can search for it on the USI website first.

USI Privacy Notice (when we apply for your USI)

TAFE NSW may apply for a USI on your behalf in certain cases, under the Student Identifiers Act 2014 (Cth).

By allowing us to apply for your USI, you agree to this Privacy Notice. You also understand that if you don’t give all the correct information, it may affect getting your USI. The information you provide during your USI application:

    • is collected by the Student Identifiers Registrar to:
      – process and verify your USI application
      – fix and resolve problems with your USI
      – create authenticated VET transcripts
    • may be shared with:
      – Commonwealth and State government departments, Boards of Study, and certain Higher Education and VET bodies for managing and auditing VET and Higher Education:
    • for education policy, research and checking eligibility for subsidies, funding or financial help
    • VET and Higher Education regulators for their regulatory duties
