
IPROWD supports Aboriginal People to train for careers with the NSW Police Force or the Australian Federal Police (AFP). It provides a safe, supportive learning environment to help you create positive change in your community.
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
work and study independently
understand ethics, rights and responsibilities in the workplace
improve your reading, writing and maths skills
use culturally appropriate communication
apply safe work practices.
Learn core skills that prepare you for opportunities in your chosen field.
A sound understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.
Skills to use cultural protocols effectively.
Confidence using technology to complete your assessments.
Skills in conflict resolution.
Strong pathways to continue your studies and advance your career opportunities.
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.
Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Person and be accepted within your community.
Complete an electronic IPROWD application form [PDF, 444 KB].
Have a driving record showing no history of serious offences.
Be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.
Take part in a pre-enrolment interview.
Complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills review. This helps us determine whether your skills match the demands of the course, direct you to an alternative study option, or connect you with study support. Your teacher will let you know when this must be completed.
During your study you'll need to provide your teacher with the following evidence:
a Working With Children Check (WWCC)
a national police check
a medical and fitness screening
vaccinations related to influenza and/or COVID-19 as required under any public health mandates
any other vaccinations required by your workplace.
Your teacher will let you know when these are required.
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
an interest in policing, serving and creating safer communities
the ability to pass basic screening by the NSW Police Force or Australian Federal Police including a criminal history and driving record check
an interest in training for a career
the ability to read and interpret documents and reports
good teamwork and communication skills.

At TAFE NSW, we recognise your previous study and work experience. You can apply for recognition of prior learning or a credit transfer with any of our courses. If you're successful you'll get your qualification faster.
Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Vocational and Study Pathways for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 15 units of competency, including 10 core and 5 speciality units.
Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.
