Develop essential skills to safely and effectively handle a chainsaw and apply basic tree felling methods. Learn to avoid kickback and sharpen chains. Prepare for an entry-level career in fields such as forestry, arboriculture, and emergency services.
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Prepare and cut materials with a handheld chainsaw
Apply various cutting techniques to trim, remove or cut trees or branches
Maintain fuel or electrically powered hand-held chainsaws
Follow tree felling emergency protocols
Follow work health and safety (WHS) procedures
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
A high level of physical fitness is recommended to ensure you are capable of doing the manual work demands of the course. As a precautionary measure, and if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please consult your doctor to ensure this training is suitable for you.
Good hand-eye coordination and the ability to lift, carry and use chainsaws
The stamina to stand for long periods of time
The ability to hold and use chainsaws and other equipment weighing 6-8kgs for extended periods of time
Strong spatial awareness for chainsaw placement and to avoid kickback (sudden upward motion of the chainsaw)
Ability to follow instructions
Ability to work under supervision
PPE equipment – helmet, long sleeve pants (chaffs to go over)/preferred cut-proof trousers, long-sleeve shirt, high-vis shirt, ear muffs, eye protection, enclosed work safety boots, tight fitting work gloves
