The nationally recognised Diploma of Dental Technology will prepare you to work in the oral health industry as a dental technician in a dental laboratory. Learn the technical skills you need to construct a range of different models and orthodontic appliances, and be at the cutting edge of technology in this growing field.

LEARN NEW SKILLS
Through theory and practical course work, you will learn how to:
- Make digital dental restorations and appliances
- Use Computer Aided Design (CAD)
- Build and repair a range of dentures, crown and bridge structures, oral splints, ceramic and fixed restorations
- Construct registration rims and thermoformed bases, appliances and articulate models

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned so far and identify what knowledge or skills need further development. In this course you will undertake:
- Knowledge assessments: short answer, multiple choice
- Skills assessments: demonstrate technical skills with verbal checks

The Diploma of Dental Technology is the entry-level qualification to the industry. This course provides you with all the underpinning practical skills and knowledge that qualifies you to work as a dental technician. You must complete this course before applying to the Advanced Diploma.
The Advanced Diploma qualification enables you to work independently, take on a supervisory role overseeing dental technicians and even start your own business.
This course does not offer excursions, however you will spend time in industry having behind the scenes experiences through your work placement at the Sydney Dental Hospital.
You will gain hands-on experience in:
- Mastering the use of dental laboratory equipment
- Understanding and using the right material for the job of building dental prosthetics
TAFE NSW is known for delivering theory alongside practical, hands-on learning. You will spend time in a dental laboratory at the Sydney Dental Hospital where you will apply your skills for real clients, under close supervision and with support from industry professionals.
On campus, you will have access to industry specific computer rooms, studios, study areas, presentation areas and general student facilities available. You will also have access to a simulated environment that reflects an industry standard laboratory.
During your course, you will participate in classroom-based theory lessons, as well as practical lessons to observe and practice your skills.
Laboratory equipment to student ratios are 1:1 or 1:2 with small class sizes providing a highly individualised student experience.
Most dental technicians work in commercial dental laboratories and many are owners of their own business. You can also be employed in the Australian Defence Forces, public and private hospitals and public health services.
Dental technology is a highly specialised and niche occupation, making it a course that can lead to a satisfying career for the right person. Many dental technicians expand their skills and run their own business or work in partnership with other dental professionals.
