Central Coast Local Health District and TAFE Enterprise - a healthy partnership
Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) cares for the coast. From youth services to healthy eating initiatives, the CCLHD provides public health services to the communities of Gosford and Wyong Shire Local Government Areas. At the beginning of 2014, they recognised the need to focus on increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment as part of their talent development strategy.
The challenge
Central Coast Local Health District needed TAFE Enterprise to provide:
- training focused on the school sector, specifically the School-Based Traineeship program;
- a bespoke training solution that is workplace based and keeps attendees engaged in the health system;
- leverage off our extensive curriculum and understanding of the public sector to deliver comprehensive solutions that ensure sustainable, long term employment;
- Certificate III qualifications in Business, Nursing and Allied Health;
- Certificate IV in Aboriginal Health Practitioner, in CCLHD and across the state in other local health districts.
TAFE Enterprise delivered
By working closely with CCLHD, TAFE Enterprise has been able to:
- ensure 100% of the attendees completed their qualification and traineeship;
- ensure 80% of trainees remain employed or in further training relevant to CCLHD and;
- grow the program from 5 trainees in 2014 to 45 trainees in 2018.
The result
The success of the training has led to the expansion of what was originally an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community targeted program, to include a wider selection of participants. The participants remain employed in the health industry and are engaged in further learning, and the CCLHD has a pipeline of well-trained and talented young people who are eager to sustain a career in healthcare.
