Course Details

The Statement of Attainment in Medical Reception will give you the skills needed to carry out the fundamental duties and responsibilities of a medical receptionist or administration in a range of health settings. You will learn how to manage written, digital and verbal interactions with customers and work colleagues; and be able to Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately. During this short practical course, you will be focused on learning how to effectively work technology to maintain patient records and prepare medical accounts within a health setting. You will achieve the following units of competence which can be credited towards the Certificate III in Business Administration (Medical) Course code: BSB31115:

BSBMED301 Interpret and apply medical terminology appropriately,
BSBMED302 Prepare and process medical accounts,
BSBMED303 Maintain patient records, and
BSBMED305 Apply the principles of confidentiality, privacy and security within the medical environment.

This is a part time evening, blended course . You will need to attend approximately 3.3 hours of class, over 1 day a week, for 16 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 3.1 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 1.1 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including Private study; research; assignment preparation and pre reading.


This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Are seeking to work in an administrative role within the medical environment. Training includes medical terminology, billing (using PracSoft and Medical Director Software), applying the principles of confidentiality in a medical environment, maintaining stock supplies and medical records. The training will provide the participant with the skills and knowledge to undertake work as a Medical Secretary, Medical Receptionist, Medical Typist or Medical Records Clerk.

This course is currently scheduled on Thursday evening from 6.00pm to 9.00pm. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
