The nationally accredited Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing prepares you for an exciting career as a veterinary nurse. Choose an area of specialisation such as companion animals, horses general, horses breeding, horses foal care, pocket pets, wildlife and captive animals or practice programs.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
To be eligible for this course, you need to demonstrate the following:
- That you have achieved a Certificate II in Animal Care as evidenced by a copy of your certificate or transcript or
- That you have achieved a Certificate III or higher-level qualification in an animal science discipline as evidenced by a copy of your certificate or transcript or
- That you have the skills and knowledge in a relevant animal science discipline as evidenced by your resume or interview with your teacher and
- That you are employed in or have secured work placement in a veterinary practice, clinic or hospital for a minimum of 480 hours as evidenced by a signed letter from a veterinary practice
Traineeship
TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing as a traineeship. In addition to meeting the above requirements, trainees must:
- Be employed in the veterinary nursing industry as this course is delivered in the workplace
- Have a signed traineeship contract

WORK PLACEMENT
Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.
During your course you will undertake a mandatory 480 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.
You are responsible for arranging your own work placement. Our team can offer support and a letter of introduction including:
- Your enrolment dates
- The TAFE NSW insurance policy
- The responsibilities of your employer
- A risk assessment form
- A work placement guide to help you find the right workplace and support you in your work placement experience
IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?
To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level
- The ability to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which may include enclosed shoes, full-length trousers and sleeved tops
- Intermediate level fitness to manage physical demands like lifting and handling animals
- Access to a computer with an internet connection
- Flexibility to work outside of business hours

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.
To be enrolled in this course offering, you need to be able to provide evidence that you have:
- hold a Certificate II in Animal Studies OR
- hold a relevant Certificate III or higher level qualification in an animal science discipline OR
- can demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge in a relevant animal science discipline to any of the above qualifications.

STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a full time, combination course. You must attend approximately 12 hours of class. You may also be required to complete approximately 6 hours of additional study. This additional study could include private study, work placements and research.
The course will run 2 days a week for 18 months.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES
This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.
Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
