Assessments

Assessments give you the opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and to identify the knowledge or skills that may need further development.

  • Knowledge tasks: online quizzes, short answer questions, case studies, written tasks and research projects, matching and true or false activities

  • Practical tasks before starting work placement: interviews, role-plays, creative projects, presentations and practical demonstrations

  • Workplace assessment tasks: written tasks, reflective journals, verbal or written questioning, planning and implementing activities, practical demonstrations

  • Submission of a training logbook

  • Workplace portfolio

Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • You will undertake a mandatory 160 hours of work placement with a suitable industry employer.

  • You need to meet the following requirements to be able to undertake work placement. Your teacher will let you know when you need to provide evidence of:

  • A Working with Children Check (WWCC)

  • Vaccination and health screenings

  • Any additional evidence your work placement provider requires

  • At TAFE NSW we provide training that includes hands-on, practical experience. Work placement ensures you have the job-ready skills to achieve competency in this course.

  • Depending on your mode of study, TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement for you or support you to find one.

  • TAFE Digital students:

  • You are responsible for arranging your own work placement. Our Skills Team can offer support and guidance to assist you.

Additional entry requirements

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • access to a computer and reliable Internet
    • a current NSW Working with Children Check prior to commencing. If you cannot obtain a WWCC you will be unable to acquire a traineeship position in an early childhood service.
    • to be reasonably physically fit to undertake the traineeship as the tasks and activities associated may involved manual lifting and other physical activities.
  • This course includes the required First Aid unit (HLTAID012). The one (1) day practical session will be completed on-site at TAFE Digital, Strathfield. If you are unable to attend at Strathfield you can enrol to do the First Aid unit with another TAFE NSW campus and you will need to notify us so we can arrange payment for the course. The First Aid practical assessment requires students to be physically able to perform CPR on the floor for a period of six (6) minutes, in multiple scenarios.

  • Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

    • a minimum of 120 hours work placement in an Australian regulated early education and care service, which will be well covered by the traineeship
  • The trainee’s work in the service is experience that formally contributes to the assessment process and consists of written tasks and direct observation of skills. Feedback and guidance is given to the student throughout the traineeship via work place assessor visits. If the trainee's employment is in a remote location, or an area without an available assessor, the trainee will be required to submit video evidence documenting their on-the-job performance.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 17 Units of competency, including 15 core and 2 speciality units.

Course delivery Studying Online

Choose when and where you study. Set your own pace, with all your study materials online, allowing you to manage your own workload. Access your learning management system 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is a highly collaborative space that involves more than simply reading and consuming.

You will interact creatively with content, teachers and your peers, improving your overall engagement with the course. Teaching staff are available to provide you with support, enabling you meet your course outcomes.

You may need to attend a vocational placement, on campus assessment and/or a teacher might need to observe and assess you in a real or simulated environment. Online courses require access to a computer with an internet connection.
