Work placement

Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

  • During your course, you will undertake a mandatory 80 hours of work placement in acute care.

  • TAFE NSW will arrange your work placement with a suitable industry employer.

Additional entry requirements

To make sure this delivery option is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

  • The learner has the ability to work independently and have the physical ability for the work role. The learner is required to complete a minimum of 80 hours Work Placement in an acute care facility, with another additional 40 hours which can be completed in another care facility. A current National Police Check and vaccination record is required before the learner can participate in their Work Placement.

  • To successfully complete this course, you will need to:

    • attend classes
    • complete your at-home learning activities set by your teachers
    • stationery such as pens/notebook/folder
    • access to computer and internet (students can access computer, internet and printing at the TAFE Campus)
    • complete all assessment tasks to a Satisfactory outcome.
    • You will also need to complete a minimum of 80 hours Work Placement.
  • For completion of the HLTAID003 Provide First Aid, it is important that all qualified first aiders have the physical ability to provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid to an expected standard. Certain aspects of assessment in this unit will rely on students’ physical ability to:

    • Perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult and infant manikin.
    • Perform CPR at floor level on an adult manikin.
    • Respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life.
  • Students who are physically unable to meet all assessment requirements will be unable to successfully complete this unit of competency.

Units Units taught in this course

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (Assisting in nursing work in acute care) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 15 Units of competency, including 15 core and 0 speciality units.

Course delivery Combination study

Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
