Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate I in Maritime Operations (General Purpose Hand Near Coastal) will launch your career as a general purpose hand on a vessel up to 80 metres. Learn to work in a crew on deck or in the engine room and get one step closer to Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certification.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

The Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) sets specific requirements for each maritime qualification to ensure you are ready to join the industry.

Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Once you pass the exam and become certified, you will be able to apply for roles and work in the industry.

Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria. You will need to meet other requirements including minimum age, minimum professional sea time hours and medical and eyesight assessments which need to be arranged by you.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

  • An intermediate level of fitness
  • The ability to swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes, while wearing work clothes and without a life jacket
  • The ability to handle rough seas without getting seasick
  • Access to appropriate work clothes, including closed work shoes and sun protection for practical sessions

STUDY COMMITMENT

This is a self paced, combined course. You will need to attend approximately 3 hours of class, over 1-2 days a week, for 52 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 2 hours of other study per week.

This is a self paced course. An individual training plan will be provided when you enrol in this course. Your plan will outline the recommended study timetable and detail your units and assessments.

SMART AND SKILLED FEES

This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.
