Course Details

The nationally recognised Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Avionics) allows you to combine your passion for aviation and electronics to work as a recognised avionic mechanical engineer. Learn to test, diagnose and repair a range of avionic electrical systems, and keep Australia flying.


Through a mix of theory and practical coursework, learn to:

  • Perform scheduled inspections
  • Diagnose faults and repair avionic systems
  • Remove and install avionic systems
  • Test and troubleshoot avionic systems
  • Work in aviation workshops

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Avionics) as an apprenticeship. There may also be options for you to study as a non-apprentice.

To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as an apprentice in the aeroskills industry
  • Submit your Training Plan Proposal (TPP) with your application

During your study, you will need to meet specific requirements to complete your coursework.

There is no work placement requirement for this qualification. As an apprentice, you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.

If you are enrolling as a non-apprentice, you need to be in relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments to meet the course completion requirements.


An Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC), is required for workers who want to be employed in the avionics industry. You will need this to complete work as an apprentice.


To be prepared for this course, it is recommended you have:

  • Literacy and numeracy skills at year 10 level
  • An interest in the aviation industry and aircraft maintenance
  • Strong spatial awareness and hand-eye coordination

There are no information sessions currently scheduled for this course

Block release delivery: Over a three year period student will attend either of the follow blocks

  1. 3 x 12 weeks per year = 1260 hours; or
  2. 2 x 18 weeks per year = 1260 hours.
    Students attend years 1, 2 and 3.

In their 4th year students will undertake their workplace journals.
Total attendance: 40 weeks in total x 26 hours per week = 1036 hours


This is a blended, part time day course. You will need to attend approximately 26.5 hours of class,as 5 day blocks, for 40 blocks over 4 years.

You may also be required to complete approximately 9.7 hours of additional study each week outside of class hours, including a Journal/Log of industrial experience and achievement.


The learner target group for Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Avionics) Aircraft Maintenance stream & Workshop competent stream includes Apprentices only.
The learners are employed by Civil Aviation Maintenance Organisations (AMOs) or members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) who perform scheduled inspections, fault diagnosis and repair, and modification of airframes and airframe mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components, and of aircraft engines and (where applicable) propellers.

The way you learn may change during your enrolment to ensure the best learning experience or to keep you safe as COVID-19 restrictions change, and some of our face to face classes may change to online or virtual classroom learning. Also, to ensure that we keep you safe while studying, we may modify our face to face classes to meet physical distancing requirements and increased cleaning on campus. If work placement and the demonstration of practical skills are requirements of your course, there may be a modification or delay in the planned timeframe due to COVID-19 impacts. Be assured, we'll keep you informed every step of the way.

This course is currently scheduled on Monday to Thursday from 8.00am to 3.00pm and Friday from 8.00am to 12.00pm via block release. This timetable may change and will be confirmed by your teacher.


This course is government-subsidised, meaning you pay a portion of the full course fee to TAFE NSW and the NSW Government will pay the balance. However, you must meet certain eligibility criteria for this to apply.

Depending on your previous qualifications and experience, your fee may be less than the maximum fee quoted. Your actual fee and eligibility for concession/exemption will be calculated and confirmed during the enrolment process. Payment plans are available through TAFE NSW for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications.

Learners are required to purchase their personal stationary to undertake the course including calculators, PPE including safety boots, cotton drill work wear, safety glasses, earmuffs, masks and hard hats.
