Course Details

The nationally accredited Certificate III in Hairdressing enables you to launch your career as a qualified hairdresser and hairstylist. Learning a broad range of hairdressing skills as well as building your clientele, this course will qualify you to work in an established salon or start your own.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

TAFE NSW offers the Certificate III in Hairdressing as either an apprenticeship or non-apprenticeship, so you can style the career you want.

Apprenticeship
To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • Be employed as an apprentice in the hair industry evidenced by a letter of support from your employer
  • Submit your training plan proposal (TPP) with your application

Non-apprenticeship
You will need to be either:

Experienced in hairdressing salon work

To be eligible for a subsidised place in this course as a non-apprentice, you must:

  • Be over 21 years of age
  • Provide evidence, such as a resume or letter of support from your employer, of current industry experience. Your workplace evidence will be reviewed prior to course entry to make sure your skills and knowledge meet course requirements

If there are gaps in your industry experience, you will need to complete simulated work activities to ensure you are able to meet work evidence requirements.

New to hairdressing (commercial)

You will need to secure work placement (details below) to meet the on-the-job component of your training. It is important to know that there is no government subsidy available for this study option.

WORK PLACEMENT

There is no work placement requirement for this qualification. As an apprentice, you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.

If you are enrolling as a non-apprentice, you need to be in relevant employment or have access to appropriate simulated workplace environments in order to meet the course completion requirements.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

With 130 locations across the state, TAFE NSW tailors qualifications to meet the needs of the local community and specific student groups (like apprentices, fast-tracked and online students). To make sure this course is the right fit for you, we will need you to demonstrate that you can meet the additional requirements below.

To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

  • This course has no entry requirements, however it is recommended you are over the age of 21

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

  • Demonstrate competency in all 28 units. This will require you to complete all live models requried within each of the 28 units to a compentent level, addressing all apects of the each assessment.
  • To compentently complete this course it is recommended you are working in a salon to practice and hone skills learnt at TAFE.

During 2021, construction of the new Meadowbank Education & Employment Precinct will be undertaken at TAFE NSW Meadowbank. There may be some disruption to students during that time, including noise, dust, vibration and changes to campus parking. STUDY COMMITMENT
This is a Full Time Blended course. You will need to attend approximately 21.8 hours of class, over 3 days a week, for 36 weeks. As well as the in-class component, you will need to complete approximately 7.1 hours of other study per week.

You may also be required to complete approximately 1 hour of additional study each week outside of class hours, including assignment prep, look and learn approach or hands on experience in the workplace, product research.

This course offering is designed for people who:

  • Have a desire to work in the hairdressing industry as a stylist, and gain a trade qualification but for whom an apprenticeship may not be appropriate.

-Learner support is avaible to those who need support these may include literacy, numeracy, english as a second language, maths, science, computing skills and communcaitons skills. Additonal support can be provided if needed through drop in centres, help within small groups, team teaching, one to one tutuion should it be deemed appropriate.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:
-To undertake this course students will need to purchase an equipment kit. Kits will be available through a supplier that can be refered to you by the college. This kits includes all the equipment you will need to undertake the course along with precribed mannequins. Students are free to source their own kits but will need to use the prescribed supplier from the college for the mannequins.
