    Work placement

    Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

    Materials needed

    To complete this course, the following materials are required:

    • You will need to provide for yourself the following resources which you will keep when you complete your study:

      • Equipment/tools of trade and personal protective equipment (PPE) are required for this qualification. Information will be available at orientation session and will cost approximately $450 - $500. You can purchase from a supplier of your choice.
      • T-shirts are optional and can be purchased from the Hair and Beauty Store at Bankstown at an approximate cost of $30.
      • Lockers are available and with a fee of $50 (refundable when key is returned)

    • This course may also be offered as a non-apprenticeship. Enquire today to discuss your eligibility.

    • To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

      • currently working in a Barber Shop or Hair Salon. You will need to supply a letter from your employer for proof of this.
      • over the age of 21
      • If you do not meet the above criteria, we currently offer a Certificate III in Barbering as a commercial course, paying full price (instalment plans are available).
    • To successfully complete this course, you will need:

      • to complete a level 3 for Language, Literacy & Numeracy by undergoing RUReady screening prior or on the first day of class.
    • Work Placement is a requirement of this course. You will need to complete:

      • Work experience in a workplace of your choice - If you are unable to organise work experience, you will need to attend TAFE NSW Bankstown on Thursdays to complete work experience in a simulated salon environment. More information will be provided to you on the first day of class.
    • WH&S requirements for classes:

    • Dress code is all BLACK, NO SHORTS or SINGLETS, and footwear must be closed-in shoes.

    UnitsUnits taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Barbering qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 26 units of competency, including 21 core and 5 speciality units.

    Core units are central to the job outcomes of a particular industry or occupation. These are the units industry has agreed are essential to be capable and qualified at a particular study level.

    Course deliveryCombination study

    Learn through a combination of classroom based, on campus classroom, virtual classroom, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled face-to-face or virtual classroom activities, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

    Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
