    Work placement

    Work placement provides you with opportunities to respond to situations and circumstances that cannot be replicated in a learning or simulated environment. Work placement strengthens your training and supports continued learning and assessment in the workplace.

    Materials needed

    To complete this course, the following materials are required:

    • You will need to purchase specialist equipment in order to develop your skills outside of scheduled class times prior to starting class. Detailed Student Equipment Lists will be provided at the orientation session or first day of class, along with suggested industry suppliers. The cost for specialist equipment for this course is approx. $550 which you will retain on completion of your training.

    • Students are also required to wear closed in protective footwear and plain black pants or black skirt below the knee. You will need to purchase a uniform at $50 from TAFE NSW hairdressing Section.

    • To be enrolled in this course, you need to be able to provide evidence that you are:

      • an apprentice (you will work in industry and study at the same time)
      • employed full time
      • signed up with an Apprentice Network Provider and have a Training Plan Proposal
      • seeking to gain skills and knowledge to become a qualified Barber after successful completion
    • To successfully complete this course, you:

      • will need to provide services on paying clients
      • may also be required to provide clients for some of your practical classes and assessments
      • must comply with Work Health & Safety requirements for classes which includes wearing closed-in protective footwear and clothing that is clean and professional for the industry
    • It is recommended that participants would be best equipped to achieve the course outcomes if they have the learning, reading, writing, literacy, and numeracy competencies to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

    • Work Placement:

    • There is no work placement requirement for this qualification. As an apprentice you will gain your experience on-the-job with your employer.

    • Students need to attend all classes, complete all class and unsupervised activities, assessment activities, and teacher directed task.

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Barbering qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 26 units of competency, including 21 core and 5 speciality units.

    Course deliveryCombination study

    Learn through a combination of classroom based, online and/or workplace activity. For example, you may participate in scheduled classroom activity, have an element of self-directed learning with online content, and/or receive supervised training while on the job, doing work experience, or on placement.

    Classroom activity will be scheduled, but online learning can provide more flexibility. Teacher support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.
