
Learn everything you need to become a novice shearer. Your teachers will give you personalised guidance to have you shearing 40 sheep a day. You’ll also learn to manage your wellbeing and ensure sheep are comfortable in the shearing shed.
Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:
Shear and crutch sheep at a novice level
Handle sheep in a way that is safe and aligned with animal welfare principles
Maintain handpieces, downtubes, grinding combs and cutters
Stay healthy and well while working in the wool harvesting industry
Work together in a shearing shed environment, doing board duties, to support workflow
Participate in workplace health and safety processes to ensure a safe working environment
Gain practical experience and develop specialist skills that give you an advantage in the job market.
Specialised skills to catch, crutch and shear sheep to novice level. Specifically shearing 40 adult merino sheep or 50 adult crossbred sheep per day
A nationally accredited qualification at a Certificate II level
Experience working independently and within a shearing team in wool harvesting
Ability to make judgements on the selection of equipment, techniques and contingency measures relating to safe work practices and animal welfare principles
Skills to apply and communicate solutions to predictable situations in a shearing shed
This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.

TAFE NSW also offers the Certificate II in Shearing as a traineeship. To be eligible to enrol in the course as a trainee you must:
a) Have a signed traineeship contract with a registered traineeship provider and registered with Training Services NSW
b) Be employed in the shearing industry to complete the work-based learning and assessment

This course involves physically catching, moving and restraining sheep using multiple parts of your body. You’ll support the sheep's weight while shearing wool with sharp equipment, which requires strength, mobility, coordination and stamina. If you identify as a person with disability, we encourage you to speak with a TAFE NSW Disability Consultant. They can help assess whether this course is the right fit for you.
As a shearer having correct form can greatly improve your comfort, safety and efficiency. This course includes practical training in a professional setting. Your teachers may occasionally need to guide your hand and foot placement or adjust your grip to help you learn the correct technique.
Ability to see small amounts of blood without fainting, in the instance of an accidental cut.
Ability to work with sheep and near sheep dogs.
Ability to provide your own flat-soled enclosed shoes or shearing moccasins.
Access to a device with internet and Microsoft Office 365 for research and online assessments. TAFE NSW libraries and learning centres may be available, depending on your location, if you don’t have access at home.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at a Year 10 high school level.
