This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.
As part of the application process, you will need to answer some questions to ensure your suitability for the course. The 1:1 interview discussion with a teacher will take place via an online video conferencing platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
You will need to provide evidence of passing your Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA) medical examination and colour blindness test.

To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:
Experience working on-site with a rostered rotation (either at sea, on an industrial or mining site, or military experience)
Experience in the marine sector
A General Purpose Hand qualification or other Maritime or Engineering/Mechanical trade qualification
Strong communication skills with the ability to work with people from various backgrounds and cultural groups
Seatime required to obtain the AMSA license
The ability to swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket and in work attire
The ability to handle rough seas without getting seasick
Learning, reading, writing, literacy, and numeracy competencies at an Australian Year 10 level

The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). Once you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you will be assessed against the relevant requirements through an AMSA examination process. Graduating from this course only meets part of the AMSA exam criteria.

Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 27 units of competency, including 17 core and 10 speciality units.
Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
