    About this course

    Get the vocational training you need to qualify as an entry-level international seafarer. Learn how to work on all domestic and international merchant ships. The course is your first step towards achieving the AMSA STCW integrated rating certification.

    Through a mixture of theory and practical course work, learn to:

    • use hand tools and power tools to carry out maintenance

    • follow fire prevention and risk minimisation procedures

    • apply safety procedures onboard international merchant ships

    • use sea survival strategies and operate survival craft in rough sea conditions

    • work as a team player in isolated and challenging environments

    • understand key aspects of seamanship.

    • A nationally accredited qualification at a certificate III level.

    • Eligibility to apply for an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency, subject to additional AMSA STCW requirements.

    • Foundational skills in engine maintenance and operations with the ability to assist engineers.

    • A first aid certificate.

    • Firefighting and sea survival skills.

    • Communication and teamwork skills for working in isolated and challenging environments.

    Entry requirements

    This course requires evidence of previous experience or study before you can enrol.

    Completion requirements

    During your study you'll need to provide your teacher with the following evidence:

    • you must attend the full course with full-time, face-to-face attendance

    • you must participate in all safety-critical training and practical assessments

    • you must demonstrate correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

    • you must bring the required PPE as instructed

    • you must follow all operational instructions.

    Entry recommendations

    To be prepared for this course, we recommend that you have:

    • a commitment to attend the full course, with full-time, face-to-face attendance

    • experience working on site in a rostered role (at sea, in industry or mining, or in the military)

    • experience in the marine sector

    • a General Purpose Hand qualification, or another maritime, engineering or mechanical trade qualification

    • strong communication skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds

    • the ability to obtain the required sea service for an AMSA licence

    • the ability to swim 50 metres and stay afloat for 5 minutes without a life jacket, while wearing work clothing

    • the ability to work in rough sea conditions

    • the ability to follow instructions and respect the chain of command

    • the ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions, day and night

    • learning, reading, writing, literacy and numeracy skills at an Australian Year 10 level.

    Additional AMSA requirements:

    • After completing this course, there are additional steps to obtain your AMSA licence. You must complete 9 months of documented sea service with a maritime employer. This includes at least 5 months as a rating forming part of a navigational and engine room watch. During this time, you must complete Training and Assessment Guidance for Seafarers (TAGS) workbooks. These requirements are not included in the course and will incur additional costs.

    The following foundation skills:

    • You can plan your work and try to solve problems on your own.

    • You can understand documents you see often in everyday life.

    • You can write short sentences and paragraphs that others can understand.

    • You can speak clearly and explain your thoughts in a group.

    • You can solve maths problems you often see in real life.

    • You can use digital tools to do everyday tasks like writing or finding info.

    Note:

    • TAFE NSW may ask you to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills test. This helps us understand your individual study needs and design an personalised plan to support your study success.

    Our graduates go onto roles like: navigational watch rating (STCW Regulation II/4), engine room watch rating (STCW Regulation III/4), able seafarer deck (STCW Regulation II/5), able seafarer engine (STCW Regulation III/5) and integrated rating (STCW Regulations II/4, III/4, II/5 and III/5).

    Licensing

    The maritime industry is regulated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). After you graduate from your TAFE NSW course, you’ll be assessed against relevant requirements through an AMSA application and assessment process. Successfully completing this course only meets part of the AMSA assessment criteria.

    Units

    Units taught in this course

    Courses are made up of a combination of both core and specialty units. In the Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Integrated Rating) qualification, you’ll need to successfully complete 27 units of competency, including 17 core and 10 speciality units.

    Please note, not all specialty units are offered at every TAFE NSW location. It is highly recommended that you check with your preferred campus for information about the specialty units offered at that location.
